How the live leaderboard works
Every eligible bar is evaluated by the same formula. Star rating carries most of the score; logarithmic review depth adds confidence without allowing sheer volume to overwhelm quality.
Weighted score0.8 × rating + 0.2 × log10(reviews + 1)
A tenfold increase in reviews adds 0.20 points, the same score effect as roughly one quarter of a rating star. Ordering uses the unrounded score, followed by rating, effective review count, and name as stable tie-breakers.
When a coordinated review campaign is documented, policy-violating ratings may be excluded through a dated integrity adjustment. The original Google figures remain visible beside the adjusted figures.
The preserved January 2026 list establishes the starting field. Retailer-first smoke or vape shops remain excluded, while newly discovered kava bars join after their identity and eligibility are checked.

A 5.0 based on a handful of reviews is not the same evidence as a 5.0 sustained across hundreds. The logarithmic review term rewards depth while keeping rating quality dominant.
Which businesses are excluded?+
Retailer-first smoke and vape shops that merely stock kava—or maintain token seating to market themselves as a kava bar—do not compete. Genuine kava bars may still sell retail or vape products when the social kava-bar experience remains primary.
How fresh are the rankings?+
The page checks the HappyKava feed regularly and displays its refresh time. If the live service is temporarily unavailable, the last verified snapshot remains visible with a clear status label.
Can a bar pay to improve its rank?+
No. Rankings and awards are not for sale. Sponsored placements remain separate from the leaderboard.
What does an adjusted rating mean?+
A documented manipulation event affected the public review profile. The leaderboard preserves the raw Google figures, quarantines ratings supported by the editorial record, and reduces review-count confidence when both negative and positive campaigns may be present.
What do confirmed and reported amenities mean?+
Confirmed amenities appear in a structured BestKavaBar editorial profile. Reported amenities come from venue descriptions or listing data and should be checked before making a special trip. Every expanded row links to corrections.
Does Global mean every kava bar already exists in the database?+
The leaderboard includes every eligible venue currently known to HappyKava. International coverage will continue expanding as bars are discovered and verified.
